Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Northvet, we care deeply about the health of your animals and the environment we all share. Living and working in Orkney, we recognise the importance of protecting our unique island landscape, wildlife and farming heritage.

We are committed to running our practice in a way that reduces our environmental impact while continuing to provide high-quality veterinary care.

What are we doing?

  • Reducing waste
We work to minimise waste across the practice by reducing single-use items where safe, recycling materials when possible and carefully managing clinical waste.

  • Using medicines responsibly
We prescribe medicines thoughtfully to avoid unnecessary use and reduce waste. This helps protect animal health, public health and the wider environment.

  • Cutting down on travel emissions
We plan farm visits efficiently and use remote consultations (phone or video) where appropriate, helping reduce fuel use across the islands.

  • Improving energy efficiency
We aim to reduce energy use in our buildings through efficient lighting, heating and equipment, and we are exploring renewable energy options.

  • Choosing better suppliers
Where possible, we work with suppliers who are committed to reducing packaging and environmental impact.

How can you help?

We are grateful for your support in making our practice more sustainable:
• Return unused or expired medicines to us for safe disposal
• Consider remote consultations when appropriate
• Combine visits where possible (especially for farm calls)
• Follow treatment plans carefully to avoid wasted medicines
• Ask us about sustainable approaches to animal care

Working Together

As a mixed practice, we are proud to support Orkney’s farming and crofting community. We can offer advice on sustainable herd and flock health, responsible medicine use and environmentally conscious animal care.

Looking Ahead

Sustainability is an ongoing process. We are continually reviewing how we work and looking for ways to improve.

If you have suggestions or would like to know more about what we are doing, please feel free to speak to a member of our team.
